This Box Can See Through Walls — And It Could Shake Up Home Security

Cognitive Systems, a Waterloo-based company, has developed a home security product named Aura, which utilises wireless signals to detect motion and classify different types of movement in and around a house. The system consists of a base station and a companion unit, placed at opposite sides of the house, and can cover an entire house since wireless signals can pass through walls. Unlike traditional camera-based systems, Aura offers privacy and does not require installation in private spaces like bedrooms or bathrooms. The system is capable of distinguishing between various types of motion, including human and pet movements. It sends alerts and can sound an alarm if it detects unfamiliar motion while the system is armed. Aura is part of the broader trend in using wireless signals for various applications, such as detecting movement and objects, to create smarter and more connected homes.

Aura Uses Your Home’s Wireless Signals to Catch Bad Guys

Cognitive Systems has launched Aura, a home security system that detects movement using wireless signals. It features a hub and a sensor that plugs into a power socket, which covers about 2,500 sq ft. The system detects any movement and sends an alert to a phone. It has been created to avoid the need for a camera, enabling it to be placed in private areas. Cognitive Systems CEO Hugh Hind said the system could learn other skills through updates, with a home security market analyst saying it could offer something new for privacy-conscious consumers.

Aura Is a Two-Piece Security System That Can Monitor Your Entire Home

Cognitive Systems has introduced Aura, a home security system that uses wireless signals to detect motion throughout an entire home, offering a discreet alternative to internet-connected smart cameras. The system includes a cube-shaped hub and a small remote sensor. Placed at opposite sides of a home, Aura provides coverage regardless of walls or obstructions. It uses patented spectrum analysis technology to filter out non-human movements and sends alerts to the owner's phone or activates the hub's siren. Aura automatically arms and disarms itself when authorised users leave or return, and recognises the presence of programmed users to avoid false alarms.
